Today, the realities of the South China Sea have changed so drastically that we’re dealing with a whole new reality that is nothing like what we used to analyse or discuss. The tensions within this region were purely local in their nature and concerned China and its immediate neighbors, but now it’s obvious that those have evolved into a matter of global security. All the previous evaluations professing a swift settlement of all issues on the back of the cultural unity and common mentality of the parties involved in the conflict turned out to be absolutely wrong. What transpired here is unlike anything that we could have anticipated.

In recent years, the Indo-Pacific region has become a major attraction for all sorts of investors due to its economic potential. After all, it’s the region of some of the world’s most crucial sea routes that are stretching from China, Japan, South Korea, Russia to the west coast of the United States. An unparalled number of commodities is being shipped along these routes every year.

On the one hand, the lack of firm boundaries within the region and vast expanses of water facilitate trade and connect peoples, countries and continents, but on the other, these routes remain exposed to all sorts of meddling, which means that one has to invest an extensive amount of efforts to protect them. This is the common goal of all the countries of the Indo-Pacific region and, above all, the countries of ASEAN and India, which are located at critical interjunctions of the trade routes. India and the ASEAN member-states share a common reliance on these oceans and their connecting seas, and a common perspective that supports openness, inclusion, sharing and peaceful cooperation. Their common goals are maintenance of peace, stability and security, unimpeded lawful commerce, freedom of navigation, along with the preservation of marine resources. All these is the base of India’s and ASEAN’s policy towards maritime security and connectivity and stable peace and development. 

Another important point that is that the Indo-Pacific region is a region of historical cultural and political interpenetration, as a number of local states derived their governing principles from the Indian heritage and culture. Even if it creates additional difficulties, it just as well creates preconditions for mutual cooperation and integration within this region.

It’s time for another Q&A article! I think I’m going to make these a regular feature that I put out every so often, so if you have any questions for me email me at admin@caitlinjohnstone.com and I’ll get to them the next time I write another of these. Let’s jump right in.

“I’d love to have more examples of how the corporate media has lied to us. Iraqi WMD is the best example, then there’s Iraqi soldiers pulling Kuwaiti babies from incubators, and of course Russiagate. What else can we point toward to explain to people what’s happening?”

There are tons of examples, but their lies about Syria have been especially appalling. Whenever anyone disputes my claim that the mass media is waging a giant deception campaign I like to share this fake, scripted CNN interview in which a seven year-old Syrian girl sounds out scripted words explaining her analysis of an alleged chemical attack. I’ve never encountered anyone who could provide an intelligible argument for this; when I share it in a debate it always makes the other party’s head spin. The girl is indisputable reciting from a script, and what’s far more disturbing is that that means CNN’s Alisyn Camerota necessarily had the other half of that script. They intentionally staged an interview designed to incriminate a government long targeted for regime change using propaganda spouting from the sweet, innocent face of a child, and they falsely presented it as a real interview.

Lately I’ve been focused on the outright lies the mass media have been circulating about Julian Assange, including the Guardian‘s now-fully disproven and always self-evidently false report that Paul Manafort met repeatedly with Assange during the election campaign. Some other examples include the bullshit they’ve been peddling on Venezuela, the Washington Post publishing sixteen smear pieces in sixteen hours against Bernie Sanders at the hottest point in the Democratic primary, the demented, hysterical smears against Jeremy Corbyn in the UK, MSNBC doing 455 Stormy Daniels segments last year but zero on Yemen, the media blackout on the Yellow Vests protests in France,

Widerstandsfähiges Getreide, das von keiner Krankheit befallen wird – mit Crispr-Cas könnte es wahr werden. Ist das die Zukunft der Landwirtschaft?

Als Crispr-Cas9 (kurz für: Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats- Cas9-System) wird eine neue gentechnische Methode bezeichnet, die es erlaubt, Gene an einer bestimmten Stelle ein- oder auszuschalten. Während in der herkömmlichen Gentechnik das Fremd-Gen mittels Genkanone in die Zelle geschossen wird, wo es eher zufällig in den Zellkern eindringt, wird nun an einer exakt definierten Stelle der Erbgutstrang zerschnitten Dafür werden Eiweißkomplexe als eine Art biologische Schere benutzt.

Auf diese Weise lassen sich nicht nur “ungünstige” Eigenschaften herausschneiden, sondern auch “günstige” Erbinformationen einfügen, zum Beispiel solche, die die Pflanzen robuster gegen die Witterung, resistenter gegen Schädlinge oder einfach nur ertragreicher macht. Auch die Forschungsbehörde des Pentagon hat damit noch viel vor: Darpa will “einfache Pflanzen als Informationssammler der nächsten Generation”.

Als Entdeckerinnen des Verfahrens gelten die französische Mikrobiologin Emmanuelle Charpentier sowie die amerikanische Biochemikerin Jennifer Doudna. Ursprünglich beruht Crispr-Cas auf einem Immunsystem von Bakterien, mit dessen Hilfe diese sich gegen bakterienspezifische Viren (so genannte Phagen) zur Wehr setzen.

Leistungsfähige Technologie mit großem Potential

Kürzlich entdeckte ein Wissenschaftlerteam um Martin Jinek von der Universität Zürich noch einen weiteren, bisher unbekannten Abwehrmechanismus von Bakterien: Fordert der Angriff der Phagen das Crispr-Cas-Immunsystem zu stark, gibt das System eine Art Notsignal, wodurch ein Enzym aktiviert wird, das dabei helfen soll, die Phagen unschädlich zu machen.

Unter Genetikern und Medizinern gilt Crispr-Cas als leistungsfähige Technologie mit großem Potential. Weil einzelne Gene gezielt ausgeschaltet werden, können bestimmte Eigenschaften einer Pflanze, eines Tieres oder auch eines Menschen gezielt geändert werden – und dies mit weniger unerwünschten Nebeneffekten. Seltener wird allerdings erwähnt, dass mit der Genschere auch artfremdes Erbmaterial eingefügt werden und das Erbgut einer Pflanze komplett umgestaltet werden kann.
