The COVID Panic Is A Lesson In Using Statistics To Get Your Way In Politics

It is unlikely that pundits, politicians, and the general public have ever been so obsessed with numbers as they are right now. I speak, of course, of the numbers surrounding deaths and illnesses attributed to COVID-19.

For months now, every new day has brought new headlines about total COVID-19 infections, total deaths, and estimates put out by models claiming to predict how many deaths will soon occur.

These numbers have become the focal points of many politicians’ careers. This is especially true for state governors and other politicians in executive positions who now in this time of “emergency” essentially rule by decree. New edicts are regularly issued by policymakers, allegedly based on an assessment of the all-important numbers. These decrees may unilaterally close businesses, cut people off from important medical procedures, ban religious gatherings, or even attempt to confine people to their homes. Those who refuse to comply may have their livelihoods destroyed.

“The Number” becomes the standard by which all behavior is judged. Will Activity X increase The Number or decrease it? For those who wish to engage in Activity Z, they must first prove that it will not increase The Number. Nothing shall be allowed that doesn’t have a good effect on The Number.

But there’s a problem with this way of doing things: the number in question only tells us about the one thing being measured. If we only have a number for that one thing, then we tend to ignore all the other things that aren’t being assigned a number.

Focusing on One Number, Ignoring Others

Things get even more lopsided if one number is being continually updated in real time, while other numbers are updated only occasionally.

We can certainly see all of this this at work in the COVID-19 debate. During March 2020 much of the population suddenly became very interested in the latest COVID-19 totals. Johns Hopkins University created a web site to show the spread of the disease, and Worldometer — a site normally only useful for checking the population of, say, Bolivia — began publishing continually updated numbers on total COVID-19 cases and deaths.

Dr. Ron Paul On COVID-19 Panic: The Real Danger “Is The Government’s Overreaction”

dr.-ron-paul-on-covid-19-panic:-the-real-danger-“is-the-government’s-overreaction”

28-03-20 05:11:00,

Authored by Mac Slavo via SHTFplan.com,

In a recent interview, Dr. Ron Paul opined on his son Rand, who has tested positive for the coronavirus. Dr. Paul said that the dangers of the coronavirus have been “blown way out of proportion” and some people benefit from crises, like politicians who want more power.

Dr. Paul begins his interview with Lior Gantz of the Wealth Research Group saying Rand Paul had no symptoms of the virus and is feeling fine, like the majority of people who have gotten. Many are already immune and have been exposed without showing any signs. “I think millions of people have probably had the infection and still do,” says Dr. Paul.

“But it’s used by an excuse by those who have a special interest…and I think that is sad.”

The problem is that this crisis was blown up so some people (the ruling class) could expand and broaden their power over the public, and Dr. Paul says hopefully, the masses will “wake up soon” to what the government is doing to them and their future.

“Somebody is making political use out of this and it’s [the political usage of the coronavirus] is out of control,” Dr. Paul (an OBYN) added.

Just look at who has been hurt the most so far: the poorest Americans in service industries that the ruling class demanded to shut down. Dr. Paul says the only real danger is the government’s expansion of power and the already sick or elderly who will get the coronavirus.  But that danger to our susceptible population already exists and has for years in the form of colds and several strains of the flu, so the panic and shut down is unwarranted. Unless you want more power and totalitarian control.

Both Dr. Paul and Mr. Gantz have been long-time liberty and free-market champions, and this interview is a must-watch if you consider yourself anything other than a slave to the government. Both men are calling out the power-hungry ruling class, something the majority of Americans have not done.

Watch the entire eye-opening interview here:

Fake News & Coronavirus Panic – The Press Must Be Held Accountable! | Armstrong Economics

fake-news-&-coronavirus-panic-–-the-press-must-be-held-accountable!-|-armstrong-economics

18-03-20 08:50:00,

The Coronavirus Panic has been caused by FAKE NEWS and the press MUST be held accountable. The press is acting irresponsibly and has turned this virus into a major scare. They criticize any politician who dares to disagree as reflected in the Washington Post’s headline:

There should be an investigation of the press and restoration of the FCC Fairness Doctrine. This is so critical at this time. The press is NOT responsible and MUST be forced to present both sides.

Fairness Doctrine-R

Trump should IMMEDIATELY reinstate the Fairness Doctrine in the media that once existed at the FCC. The Fairness Doctrine was a policy of the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC), introduced in 1949, that required the holders of broadcast licenses both to present controversial issues of public importance and to do so in a manner that was — in the Commission’s view — honest, equitable, and balanced. The FCC eliminated the Fairness Doctrine in 1987 and in August of 2011, the FCC formally removed the language that implemented the doctrine.

newscast_videoExpand this doctrine to print media – all newspapers! They lose their license if their reporting remains unbalanced and filled with propaganda. Freedom of the press is not the freedom to report only what they want in the way they want. If they claim to be reporting news, then it has to be the unbiased news. Opinion is for op-eds and they must report both views. STOP THE PROPAGANDA NOW!

The NY Post in New York City wrote an article calling out, “American journalism is collapsing before our eyes.” Indeed, journalists now come in near the bottom of the poll that ranks public respect for professions, according to Gallup Polls. Indeed, the NY Post reported the truth that is so obvious to us all that the media is more interested in hating Trump than reporting news. It’s time to clean up the press, and not just drain the swamp. They swim in the same stench.

Panic Will End But Tyranny Will Not

panic-will-end-but-tyranny-will-not

16-03-20 11:35:00,

Authored by Gary Barnett via LewRockwell.com,

“Our contemporaries are constantly excited by two conflicting passions; they want to be led, and they wish to remain free: as they cannot destroy either one or the other of these contrary propensities, they strive to satisfy them both at once. They devise a sole, tutelary, and all-powerful form of government, but elected by the people. They combine the principle of centralization and that of popular sovereignty; this gives them a respite: they console themselves for being in tutelage by the reflection that they have chosen their own guardians. Every man allows himself to be put in leading-strings, because he sees that it is not a person or a class of persons, but the people at large that holds the end of his chain.

By this system the people shake off their state of dependence just long enough to select their master, and then relapse into it again. A great many persons at the present day are quite contented with this sort of compromise between administrative despotism and the sovereignty of the people; and they think they have done enough for the protection of individual freedom when they have surrendered it to the power of the nation at large. This does not satisfy me: the nature of him I am to obey signifies less to me than the fact of extorted obedience.”

~ Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America

Any real state of fear will bring panic, and once panic is the prevailing attitude of society at large, the herd seeks safety at all cost. Seeking safety under these circumstances allows for tyranny by the ruling class, and when the restrictive consequences of that tyranny are in place, escape from mass servitude is almost impossible to achieve. It must be understood that decisions made under stress due to fear end with a loss of freedom, and when freedom is compromised, what is left is slavery.

We have been told that a pandemic is upon us, and that we must sacrifice for the good of all, and for the sake of the nation. If the people at large accept this premise, individual sovereignty is not only compromised, but also permanently damaged. When the masses as a group seek shelter from harm,
